Gastroenterology

Division Chief: Jay Fenster, MD
516-374-0670

The Division of Gastroenterology at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital offers a full spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities involving gastroenterology (conditions of the digestive system) and hepatology (conditions of the liver), and is staffed by exceptionally talented gastroenterologists and nurses.

Diagnostically, all manners of endoscopy are offered, including colonoscopy (both to screen for colon cancer and to treat precancerous polyps), upper endoscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a technique that diagnoses and treats certain problems of the liver or pancreas. Many of the endoscopic techniques provide the division’s physicians with the ability to treat abnormalities at the same time without having to go to surgery, including removing polyps, using endoscopic clips for bleeding, endoscopic banding for large veins, and treating biliary obstruction and blockages.

The division is a teaching affiliate of SUNY Downstate, with a gastroenterology fellow rotating throughout the year.

Evaluation and treatment are conducted on a regular basis in the Hospital’s Ambulatory Care Center. Appointments for the Gastroenterology Clinic are necessary and are by referral only from a primary care physician. Please call 718-869-7690 for more information on the Gastroenterology Clinic.
