Pulmonary / Critical Care

Division Chief: Nathan Rothman, MD
516-569-6966

The Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care at St. John's Episcopal Hospital cares for patients who are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from the Emergency Department or from other units within the Hospital. The Hospital's ICU is a combined medical/surgical unit with 20 critical care beds. The pulmonary service also cares for patients with pulmonary disorders in other units of the Hospital. Conditions treated include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia and lung cancer. A pulmonary attending is available for consultations.

Traditionally in hospitals, the field of intensive care has been directed through pulmonologists who may take additional training in critical care. Often, critical care patients are intubated (put on a ventilator), further making the case for a pulmonologist-critical care link. For instance, many of the Hospital's pulmonologists are board-certified in critical care and the chief of this Division is triple board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care.

The Division has great experience with a wide range of critical care cases, with special expertise in geriatric critical care, as well as sleep apnea.
