St. John’s Medical Group and the St. John’s ICARE Foundation Present A Cancer Awareness Event Sponsored by National Grid

ROCKAWAY BEACH, NEW YORK – Sept. 21, 2022 – Local Rockaway residents learned about staying healthier and were screened for serious health conditions at a Cancer Awareness Event hosted by Population Health’s Mobile Health Unit, St. John’s Medical Group (SJMG), St. John’s ICARE Foundation and sponsored by National Grid on September 16.

According to 2018’s NYC Health Community Profile for the Rockaways and Broad Channel, lung, breast cancer (among women), and colorectal cancer were recognized as the three leading causes of cancer-related premature deaths in the area. With efforts to educate and bring awareness, the event focused on offering cancer screening tests and cancer prevention information to the community in order to help close the gap of this fatal social determinant of health.

Providers from St. John’s Medical Group, Margaret O. Carpenter Women’s Health Center, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Imaging and Radiology, as well as Registered Dieticians were present for the day. Additionally, National Grid shared the sentiment in helping the community foster healthier lives with information for the community on smarter, cleaner, and more resilient energy solutions that are being met in current projects throughout the Rockaways.

“Outreach events such as this enforce St. John’s mission to provide healthcare and health education to the people we serve,” said Michael P. Luyckx, Administrator for Cancer and Imaging Services at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. “We want to meet people where they are to provide the preventative care and information they need to build healthier families and healthier communities.”

St. John’s Population Mobile Health Unit is on the move throughout the Peninsula, Five Towns and beyond offering flu and COVID-19 shots, blood pressure and more. Find out where the Mobile Health Unit will be present in the upcoming weeks by visiting https://ehs.org/mobile-health-unit.
