Posted on February 7, 2019

FAR ROCKAWAY, 2019—Thursday, February 7, this week New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced $204 million to support 95 projects that will transform and protect New York State’s health care system.Among the $77.7 million awarded to New York City, was St. John’s Episcopal Hospital who was awarded two grants totaling over $7 million.

St. John’s will receive $3,117,938 to help fund a state of the art Women’s Comprehensive Service Center, to provide a continuum of care to the women of the Rockaways, Five Towns, and Long Beach areas. In addition, $3,955,000 will be allocated to create a new Radiation Oncology Center with a linear accelerator to increase access to cancer treatment services for the community.

These projects will help support the objectives of the state’s Delivery System Reform Inventive Program. The program was created to reduce healthcare costs and improve health outcomes of New Yorkers by expanding access to inpatient, primary, preventive, and other ambulatory services as part of regionally integrated healthcare delivery systems. Ultimately, the program’s goal is to reduce avoidable hospital visits by 25% by 2020.

“We are extremely excited to be awarded this opportunity to create services that will be of tremendous benefit to the surrounding community” said St. John’s CEO Gerard Walsh. “Thank you to Governor Cuomo and his administration for creating an opportunity for us to apply for this funding. Historically, our community has experienced a shortage of healthcare resources, but as the Rockaways begin to transform, so will St. John’s. We are looking forward to continuing to take the necessary steps to offer a wide range of much-needed services to our patients.”
