Episcopal Health Services and Local Leaders Urge Water Safety Ahead of World Drowning Prevention Day
Far Rockaway, New York, July 24, 2025 — As the summer heats up, Episcopal Health Services (EHS), Swim Strong Foundation and the New York City Parks Department are reminding Rockaway residents and visitors to stay safe in and around the water ahead of World Drowning Day on July 25.
EHS is reaffirming its commitment to public safety by partnering with like-minded organizations to promote the importance of water safety, raise awareness of drowning risks, and encourage safe summer recreation along the peninsula’s beaches and pools.
“At EHS, we are committed to the health and safety of our community,” said Donald T. Morrish, MD, MMM, Chief Executive at EHS. “As families head to beaches and pools, maintaining a strong focus on water safety is critical to preventing avoidable tragedies and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all.”
Drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional deaths, with children among the most vulnerable, according to the World Health Organization. In communities like the Rockaways, education and awareness are essential to prevention.
Swim Strong Foundation, which works year-round to educate communities on safe swimming practices, offers the following key tips for staying safe in the water:
- Always swim with a buddy—even in lifeguarded areas.
- Know your limits and stay within them. If you’re not a strong swimmer, remain where you can put your feet down.
- Parents should keep their eyes on family members at all times and ensure smaller children are within arm’s reach—you are the first and best line of defense.
- Situational knowledge of water conditions and swim skills can be lifesaving.
“I have seen firsthand how access to situational knowledge of water and swim skill education can transform lives,” said Shawn Slevin, Executive Director of Swim Strong Foundation. “World Drowning Prevention Day is an urgent reminder that drowning is fast, silent, and preventable. Our goal is to ensure that our community – especially children – has access to the skills and knowledge they need to keep them safe in, on, and around the water.”
The NYC Parks Department, which oversees the city’s beaches and public pools, reinforced the importance of preparedness and supervision.
“Our lifeguards are trained to respond in seconds, but prevention begins before you enter the water,” said Iris Rodriguez-Rosa, NYC Parks Commissioner. “We urge everyone to swim only when lifeguards are on duty, follow all safety instructions, and take advantage of our free swim classes for all ages.”
By working together to raise awareness, promote safe habits, and educate the community, EHS and its partners aim to ensure that everyone enjoys the summer season safely.
