Episcopal Health Services Expands Access to No-Cost Cancer Screenings

Far Rockaway, New York, October 22, 2024 — Episcopal Health Services (EHS) is expanding its Cancer Services Program, funded by the New Y ork State Department of Health (NYSDOH). The increase in services comes as EHS received NYSDOH accreditation to offer free breast and cervical cancer screenings, and diagnostic services at the EHS Clinical Learning Center and Margaret O’ Carpenter Women’s Center. Previously, these services were available exclusively at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.

EHS’ Cancer Services Program has successfully screened and treated hundreds of individuals since its inception, demonstrating its effectiveness in early cancer detection and improving health outcomes. Notable achievements include the identification and treatment of multiple breast and cervical cancer cases, providing critical diagnostic services at no cost to uninsured patients, and the enrollment of diagnosed patients into the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program for comprehensive care.

“Early detection of cancer is crucial for successful treatment,” said Preet Kukreja, MBA, MHA, FAPM, Director of Population Health at Episcopal Health Services. “The Cancer Services Program provides screenings that can identify abnormal cells before they become cancerous, allowing for timely intervention.”

According to the NYSDOH, it’s important to get screened for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers because screening tests can find these cancers early, when they are most treatable. If something abnormal is detected, diagnostic services are available at no cost through EHS’ Cancer Services Program. Eligible individuals diagnosed with breast, cervical, or colorectal cancer may also qualify for coverage through the New Y ork State Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program.

“The success of the Cancer Services Program is a testament to our commitment to provide accessible and affordable cancer care. The program has demonstrated significant impact inimproving community health and addressing prevalent cancer disparities within our population,” said Renee Hastick-Motes, SVP & Chief External Affairs Officer at Episcopal Health Services.
