St. John’s Episcopal Hospital Awarded Laboratory Reaccreditation from The Joint Commission

Far Rockaway, New York, July 2, 2025 — St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, part of Episcopal Health Services (EHS), has successfully earned reaccreditation of its laboratory by The Joint Commission (TJC), recognizing its adherence to the highest national performance standards of quality and safety.

The hospital received The Joint Commission’s prestigious Gold Seal of Approval®, a symbol that reflects a sustained commitment to delivering safe, high-quality and effective patient care.

“This reaccreditation and the Gold Seal of Approval® reflect our commitment to clinical excellence and patient-centered care,” said Donald T. Morrish, MD, MMM, Chief Executive Officer of EHS. “It marks another milestone in our mission to provide the safest and most effective care to the communities we serve.”

The reaccreditation followed a rigorous on-site review conducted in April, in accordance with TJC’s Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Laboratory and Point-of-Care Testing. The evaluation assessed a broad range of laboratory services, including: clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, transfusion services, pathology and tissue banking.

“Our laboratory plays a critical role in diagnosis and treatment, and this recognition speaks to the operational excellence we strive for every day,” said Karen Paige, MBA, RN, CPHQ, CPPS, CPXP, OCN, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of EHS. “We are proud of our team members and the systems we’ve built to ensure the highest standards of patient safety and care.”

“This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our laboratory team,” said Robert Bloise Jr., DMSc, MS, PA-C, Chief Quality Officer at EHS. “It demonstrates our unwavering focus on quality, safety, and continuous improvement in all aspects of patient care.”

The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help health care organizations measure, assess and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted onsite observations and team member interviews.
