Innovation in Women’s Health

At Episcopal Health Services (EHS), innovation in women’s health means leading the way in research, education and clinical advancement to achieve better outcomes for the Rockaway community and beyond.

Clinically Focused AI to Improve High-Risk Pregnancy Care

EHS is advancing artificial intelligence (AI) systems designed to address real-world clinical challenges. Our AI research focuses on improving the prediction and management of preterm labor, a critical concern for high-risk patient populations. These systems are not abstract or experimental technologies, they are built on real patient data and are designed to support earlier, more personalized interventions.

By identifying risks sooner and refining management strategies, our medical professionals aim to reduce complications and improve outcomes for both mothers and babies. This work is backed by peer-reviewed publications, demonstrating that EHS has a strong, evidence-based foundation in AI-driven women’s health research.

Research That Changes Practice

Innovation at EHS is clinically-focused. We research the most effective treatments for both common and rare obstetric and gynecologic conditions, with an emphasis on translating findings directly into patient care. This research is cutting-edge and is regularly presented by our residents and attendings at both local and national academic conferences. Examples of our initiatives include:

  • Comparative treatment studies that inform evidence-based decision-making
  • Best practices for managing high-risk pregnancies
  • Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) strategies to improve surgical outcomes

Our research has contributed to the evidence base that informs national clinical practice recommendations for pregnancy-related illness. For example, a study with contribution from Dr. Daniel J. Martingano at EHS demonstrated that, in women with preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM), antibiotic regimens substituting azithromycin for erythromycin were associated with significantly lower rates of clinical complications, without shortening the latency period of pregnancy.

These findings helped support updates in national practice guidance, including recommendations from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and other professional bodies, endorsing azithromycin as a suitable alternative macrolide in the antibiotic management of PPROM when erythromycin is unavailable or not tolerated.

EHS is nationally recognized, and our team continues to present groundbreaking findings at leading professional meetings, including the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine’s annual Pregnancy Meeting, ACOG’s annual clinical and scientific meeting, ACOG’s local district II meeting, and the American Urogynecologic Society’s annual meeting among others.

Surgical Technique & Procedural Innovation

Innovation also means refining how care is delivered in the operating room. EHS physicians have pioneered and advanced novel surgical techniques designed to address complex clinical challenges, including cases involving poor tissue integrity and uterovaginal prolapse.  Additionally, they have developed innovative approaches in managing severe postpartum bleeding. These advancements have earned professional recognition and awards, reflecting both technical excellence and a strong commitment to person-centered care. Our focus remains on enhancing procedural safety, supporting smoother recoveries, and improving long-term outcomes for our patients.

A Community-Integrated Model of Innovation

Our physicians are surgeons, clinicians and educators who care for patients every day, ensuring innovation remains deeply connected to real-world clinical practice. Our research is driven directly by the needs of our community – particularly patients facing complex, high-risk conditions.

We collaborate closely with:

  • Residents and fellows
  • Doula services
  • Centering pregnancy programs
  • Community-based support systems

Through these partnerships, we deliver the most current, evidence-based care to our patients while training physicians who will go on to lead in their own communities. EHS residents are actively engaged in research and clinical innovation, with many pursuing advanced training in subspecialties such as Maternal-Fetal Medicine and health policy. Their achievements reflect the strength of our training environment and our commitment to cultivating the next generation of leaders in women’s health.

State-of-the-Art Training & Facilities

EHS has invested in state-of-the-art facilities that advance excellence in patient care and education. The newly updated Labor & Delivery suite enhances the patient experience while improving clinical workflow and efficiency. Our simulation center features advanced obstetric simulation technology, enabling physicians, residents, nurses and staff to train for both routine and urgent scenarios. By rehearsing complex situations in a controlled, supportive environment, our team refines their skills and strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration, ensuring patients receive the highest standard of safe, coordinated care..
