Welcome from the Chairman

Dear Applicant,

I am pleased that you are interested in the general surgery residency program at St. John's Episcopal Hospital. The mission of our program is to produce well-educated, highly-qualified residents who excel in general surgery or can advance into a surgical sub-specialty fellowship. Our goal is to train and educate physicians who have the clinical skills and humanistic qualities necessary to become well-rounded general surgeons.

The residency program provides a wealth of clinical and operative experiences, a diverse house staff and faculty interested in teaching. St. John's entire surgical staff is committed to providing residents with educational and clinical opportunities involving high patient volume and hands-on experience.

The surgical residency is a fully approved 20 position/5-year program that also includes rotations to several healthcare facilities that provide a rich and varied source of patients, illnesses and care settings. They include Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, NY), Trinitas Hospital (Elizabeth, NJ) and South Nassau Communities Hospital (Oceanside, NY).

For those who pursue a career in surgery, the years spent in residency represent a major commitment both to furthering their professional aims and to serving those under their care.

I look forward to meeting with you during your interview day. Our faculty, house staff, and administrative staff are pleased to assist you with any questions you may have about our residency program.

Sincerely,

Javier E. Andrade, MD. F.A.C.S.
