Childbirth Education at EHS

Preparing You for Birth, Baby, and Beyond

At Episcopal Health Services (EHS), the Labor and Delivery Suite’s Childbirth Education program is thoughtfully designed to help you feel informed, confident and prepared at every stage of your journey – from pregnancy through bringing your baby home. We go beyond foundational instruction to offer comprehensive education that supports your physical health, emotional well-being, and decision-making, empowering you to approach childbirth and early parenthood with confidence and peace of mind.

What to Expect from Childbirth Education

Our Childbirth Education Series is designed to equip you with the knowledge, tools and support you need throughout your pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum journey.

Led by experienced doula Te-Ana Souffrant, these classes provide a welcoming and supportive environment where you can learn, ask questions, and connect with others in your community.

Our classes are currently offered virtually and take place every Tuesday of the month from 1–2 PM. 

What You Will Learn

  • The history of maternal health care in the U.S.
  • What support during pregnancy and birth should look like
  • Labor and birth preparation
  • Nutrition during pregnancy
  • Postpartum recovery (the 4th trimester)
  • Breastfeeding and lactation support
  • Newborn care basics

Breastfeeding and Baby-Friendly Support

EHS is proud to be a Baby-Friendly designated hospital, reflecting our commitment to evidence-based practices that support breastfeeding, bonding, and the healthiest possible start for you and your baby.

As part of your education, you’ll have access to:

  • Breastfeeding resources and guidance
  • The Breastfeeding Mothers Bill of Rights
  • “10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding” (English and Spanish)
  • WIC and CDC breastfeeding support information

The Labor and Delivery Suite team also provides guidance on:

  • Skin-to-skin contact
  • Rooming-in with your newborn
  • Understanding the risks of formula use

Important Health and Safety Education

Yours and your baby’s safety is a top priority. Our program includes important information on:

  • Vaccines during and after pregnancy
  • Pediatric vaccinations, including Hepatitis B and DTaP
  • Urgent maternal warning signs to watch for after delivery
  • Safe recovery and when to seek medical attention

You’ll leave with the knowledge you need to recognize concerns early and take action when needed.
