Javier Andrade, MD, Named Interim Chairman of Surgery at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital

FAR ROCKAWAY, NY – FEB. 23, 2015 – St. John's Episcopal Hospital has named Javier Andrade, MD, to the position of Interim Chairman of Surgery. Dr. Andrade is a specialist in laparoscopic, endoscopic and bariatric (weight loss) surgery.

Dr. Andrade, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, has performed more than 2,000 advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic surgical procedures, including over 500 bariatric surgeries. He was the first surgeon on Long Island to perform virtually scarless single incision sleeve gastrectomy and is one of the few surgeons in the New York metropolitan area that performs single incision lap band and sleeve gastrectomy.

A graduate of the medical school at the prestigious Universidad Central de Venezuela, Dr. Andrade completed his surgical internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and his residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where he received the Golden Scalpel award for outstanding surgical resident. Following his residency, Dr. Andrade completed a laparoendoscopic and bariatric surgery fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He then joined one of the largest bariatric surgical practices in the New York City/Long Island area.

Board-certified in general surgery, Dr. Andrade is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. He is also associate editor of Advances in Obesity, Weight Management & Control, a scholarly journal.
