Elementary Students with Big Hearts

FAR ROCKAWAY, 2017—Thursday, April 6th, students from WAVE Prep Elementary School donated baby items to St. John’s for new mothers who deliver at the hospital. The group of twenty students, ranging in grades from Kindergarten to Fifth, presented CEO Jerry Walsh, Dr. Donald Morrish, Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Denise Potts, Director of Maternal Child Health with the items, which included toys, bibs, diapers, blankets, and clothing.
In addition to presenting their donations, the students were given a tour of St. John’s, visiting the Imaging and Labor and Delivery Units. They observed newborns in the hospital’s Level II (special care) nursery and spoke with nurses from the department about their jobs and how their unit functions. The group also was served lunch in the hospital cafeteria and met St. John’s Executive Chef, Tim Pitts.
“It is important for children to understand the functions of a hospital and the art of giving back. Annually, we host the students from WAVE Prep and we are grateful for our partnership with them,” said Jerry Walsh, CEO.
This was the second year WAVE Prep students participated in a baby item drive for the hospital. The donated items will be given to new parents in need who deliver babies at St. John’s. All of the doctors, nurses and staff of the Labor and Delivery Department look forward to hosting the school for many years to come.
