St. John’s Episcopal Hospital was awarded 2nd place at the 8th Annual Nursing Symposium (an 1199 RN Labor Management Initiative). The event was held at the Brooklyn Marriot and included over 300 participants, with a total of 21 presentations entered into competition. St. John’s Telemetry team competed amongst other hospitals that are part of the 1199 Union’s network, including Mount Sinai Beth Israel, New York University, and Jamaica Medical Center.

Despite the competition, the T-11 Telemetry team stood out amongst the other institutions with their progress towards reducing readmissions and complications with patients who suffer from Congestive Heart Failure. Their collaborative efforts led them to not only garner great attention in the competition, but be awarded 2nd place overall.
This showcase of research was executed exceptionally and was a great representation of their work at St. John’s. The team’s research explained the revisions implemented when educating patients on how to manage their Congestive Heart Failure.
The team strongly emphasized the use of Bloom’s Taxonomy in their approach to educating patients about the condition. This new teaching method is also supported by the nursing staff’s adaptation of the “Get with the Guidelines” technique to managing Congestive Heart Failure. “Get with the Guidelines” is a series of recommendations created by the American Heart Association on how to manage Congestive Heart Failure.
“We’re very proud to have earned this award through our work at St. John’s,” said Leonid Pinhas, Nurse Manager. “Our team looks forward to continuing to implement the findings of our research through our interactions with patients and save more lives in the future.”
