St. John’s Gets New CT Scanner

FAR ROCKAWAY, 2018—Tuesday, December 4, Patients in St. John’s Episcopal Hospital’s Emergency Department will soon have access to additional state-of-the-art technology to assist in their diagnoses.

St. John’s leadership announced that as part of its 3- phase, $10 million Emergency Department renovation, the hospital will now house a new CT Somatom Definition AS-64 Slice Siemens Scanner. The CT scanner will provide vital information and images to help many patients, especially those who are experiencing symptoms of a stroke.

“When treating a potential stroke patient, every minute counts in determining the expected extent of a patient’s recovery,” said St. John’s CEO, Gerard Walsh. “The new CT scanner will enable our staff to treat patients more accurately and quickly, meaning improved recovery, and even survival outcomes.”

Currently, the hospital utilizes one other CT scanner. The addition of a new scanner means that when routine and emergency downtimes affect the functionality of one scanner, patients will not necessarily have to be transferred to other hospitals to receive their testing and treatment.

In addition to assisting in the diagnosis of a stroke, the new scanner will be able to detect internal injuries and bleeding, diagnose muscle and bone disorders, and locate tumors, infections, and blood clots.
