St. John’s Residents Win Big

Posted on June 27, 2018

FAR ROCKAWAY, Residents working with St. John’s Episcopal Hospital’s OB-GYN department were awarded for their presentations at the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society’s poster competition. Dr. Kerry-Anne Perkins was awarded 1 st place for the Intern/Resident Case Report category, while Dr. Sheena Favors was awarded 3 rd place in the same category, beating out many other competitors.

Dr. Perkins, a 3 rd -year resident at the hospital, presented a case study surrounding a patient with an ectopic pregnancy, which makes up 1-2% of pregnancies. While this type of pregnancy is fairly common, Dr. Perkins’ patient’s pregnancy was found in the omentum, or fatty tissue of the abdomen, which is extremely rare.

Dr. Favors, who is also a 3 rd -year resident, presented a case in which a woman presented symptoms of labor after having refused all prenatal sonograms. Her infant had a lethal form of chondrodysplasia, which is a rare skeletal disorder. This lead to the fetus having hydrocephalus (an enlarged head), and the baby passed away shortly after birth. The hydrocephalus could have been identified with sonograms and preparations could have been made. This case report illustrated the importance of imaging during the prenatal course, as well as the value that it holds for healthcare providers in preparing for births.

“I’m extremely proud of our residents for their dedication to the field of Obstetrics & Gynecology,” said Dr. Anita Holman, Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Director at St. John’s. “Our team looks forward to continuing to work hard to learn from our patients and provide them with excellent care.”
