St. John’s Strikes Gold—Again!

Posted on June 28, 2018

FAR ROCKAWAY, 2018 St. John’s Episcopal Hospital has received the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award. The award recognizes hospitals who meet specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period.

These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of maximizing recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. In addition, patients receive education on managing their health and schedule a follow-up visit before being discharged from the hospital.

“We are pleased to recognize St. John’s Episcopal Hospital for their commitment to stroke care,” said Eric E. Smith, M.D., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and an associate professor of neurology at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. “Research has shown that hospitals adhering to clinical measures through the Get With The Guidelines quality improvement initiative can often see fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates.”

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. alone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, which almost 795,000 people suffering a new or recurrent stroke every year.

“We are extremely proud of our Emergency Department staff for doing their part to reduce the devastating effects of stroke on our patients, “said St. John’s CEO, Gerard Walsh. “We are looking forward to continuing to provide top-notch treatment for all of our patients.”

Congratulations to all who helped St. John’s maintain this standard!
