St. John’s Medical Group Hosts Their Annual Cinco De Mammo Event in Celebration of Women’s Health and Cinco de Mayo.

Far Rockaway, New York, May 8, 2023 — St. John’s Medical Group celebrated their third annual Cinco De Mammo event in celebration of women’s health and Cinco de Mayo all in one. The family-focused event was held at the Margaret O. Carpenter Women’s Health Center located at 105-38 Rockaway Beach Blvd. in Rockaway Beach. This year’s event offered coffee with Doctors under the tent, a Mariachi Band, Burritos, an Ice Cream Truck, a Live DJ, Zumba Dance Party, a Bounce House, Ping Pong, and many Games for the kids. Many of the Medical staff were present to answer questions, register screenings, and schedule tests. A guided tour of the Margaret O. Carpenter Health Center was available for guests as well.

St. John’s Medical Group’s 3D mammography machine offers state-of-the-art imaging technology that allows clinicians to see breast tissue details more clearly to uncover breast cancer that can be hidden by overlying breast tissue.

“The whole premise of this event is to make the community aware of the importance of Mammogram screenings, Cervical Cancer Screenings, and understanding the importance of preventive medicine to stay healthy, “ says Rosemary Bonilla, Vice President, Practice Management and Ambulatory Care at Episcopal Health Services. “We have this beautiful place, the Margaret O. Carpenter Health Center, that provides numerous services right here in the Rockaways.”

According to New York City Department of Health data, breast cancer is a leading cause of premature death in the Rockaways. Patient survival outcomes are improved if breast cancer is detected in its early stage. If you’re a woman 40 or older, the American Cancer Society recommends a mammogram every year to check for lumps or other abnormalities that may indicate early stages of breast cancer. Women with personal or family histories of breast cancer should consult their doctors about the need for more frequent or earlier mammograms.

Mammograms do not replace breast self-exams. Although mammograms can see cancerous lesions earlier than you can feel them with a self-exam, it is still important to examine your breasts every month.
