Far Rockaway, New York, June 15, 2023 — St. John’s Medical Group (SJMG) welcomes Dr. Apolinario Mateo as their new medical director. Dr. Mateo comes to SJMG with a wealth of experience and skills, both as a clinician and lead physician in the field of Internal Medicine—his background will prove to be a significant asset to SJMG clinical operations. Dr. Mateo will provide clinical guidance at all SJMG Ambulatory practices and clinics and lead the team to improve quality initiatives and clinical operational workflows.

Dr. Mateo received his medical degree from Ateneo de Davao Medical School in the Philippines. His residency in Internal Medicine was completed at the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens and was followed by a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Dr. Mateo held full-time attending positions at the New Jewish Home, North Central Bronx Hospital, Concourse Rehab and Nursing, Workmen’s Circle MultiCare Center, and the Brooklyn VA Hospital. After ten years of caring for patients with various cancers and blood diseases, he returned to teaching Internal Medicine at multiple institutions. Over the past 20 years, he has taught Ambulatory Medicine and Primary Care and cared for patients in medically underserved communities in the Bronx.

“We are so thankful to all our team members for the warm welcome Dr. Mateo has already received at the organization. We look forward to working with him as we continue to service the Rockaway Peninsula,” said Rosemary Bonilla, VP of Physician Practices & Ambulatory Care at SJMG.
