Colonoscopy
A powerful tool for early detection.
A colonoscopy is a vital screening procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inside of your large intestine for signs of colorectal cancer or other abnormalities. Adults aged 45 and older should undergo regular colorectal cancer screenings, even if no symptoms are present. At EHS, we make it easy to stay on top of your health with expert care in a supportive environment.
What Does a Colonoscopy Treat or Find?
Colonoscopy is used to:
- Detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous
- Screen for early signs of colorectal cancer
- Diagnose causes of abdominal pain, bleeding, or chronic diarrhea
- Evaluate anemia and changes in bowel habits
Because nearly all colorectal cancers begin as polyps, early detection and removal during colonoscopy is one of the most effective ways to prevent cancer.
How to Prepare for a Colonoscopy
Your doctor will provide you with detailed instructions, but most preparations include:
- A clear-liquid diet the day before the procedure
- A prescribed bowel-cleansing solution or laxative to clear the colon
- Temporary adjustments to medications such as blood thinners or iron supplements
Following preparation guidelines carefully is essential for an accurate and successful exam.
