Episcopal Health Services Shares Expert Camp Safety Tips to Keep Children Healthy This Summer

Far Rockaway, New York, June 18, 2026 — As schools let out and children head to summer camps, Episcopal Health Services (EHS) is encouraging parents and caregivers to take proactive steps to protect children from common summer health and safety risks, including dehydration, sunburn, drowning, insect-borne illnesses, and heat-related illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning remains one of the leading causes of death for children ages 1–14, while excessive sun exposure during childhood can significantly increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also warns that children are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness because their bodies do not regulate temperature as efficiently as adults.

“Summer camp is a wonderful opportunity for children to stay active, build confidence, and make lasting memories, but safety should always come first,” said Lesly Michel, MD, pediatric endocrinologist and primary care physician at Episcopal Health Services. “Parents can help prepare their children by ensuring they are up to date on vaccinations, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and understand basic safety rules. It’s also important for parents to honestly assess their child’s swimming abilities and make sure children always follow water-safety guidelines. A little preparation can go a long way toward ensuring a fun, healthy, and safe summer camp experience.”

Camp Safety Tips:

Stay Hydrated: Drink water or preferably a drink with electrolytes regularly throughout the day. Pack a reusable water bottle and refill it frequently.

Protect Against Sun Exposure: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply every two hours. Wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing. Seek shade during peak sun hours.

Practice Water Safety: Ensure your child is comfortable in the water and has swimming skills appropriate for the activities offered at camp. Encourage a buddy system in the water; never swim alone and wear properly fitted life jackets

Avoid Tick and Insect Bites: Use EPA-approved insect repellents, wear long sleeves and pants in wooded areas and perform daily tick checks after outdoor activities.

Promote Good Hygiene: Wash hands frequently and cover coughs and sneezes. Avoid sharing water bottles and personal items.
