Welcome to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital’s Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department. The Laboratory operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provides comprehensive and routine testing of specimens across the health system.

The Laboratory is a state-of-the-art, full service, automated lab, staffed with experienced, licensed Medical Technologists and board-certified Pathologists. Our employees are overseen by a Laboratory Medical Director and a Clinical Administrative Director along with an excellent Management Team. We process approximately 2 million tests each year in specialty areas that include Chemistry/Serology/Blood Gas, Hematology/Coagulation/Urinalysis, Transfusion Medicine and Anatomic Pathology.

Laboratory Scope of Services

Laboratory Services provides comprehensive testing and blood bank services utilizing state-of-the-art analyzers and trained New York State Licensed Clinical Medical Technologists for all patients at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. In an effort to meet our patients’ needs, all key Emergency Department and STAT tests are turned around in rapid time and all critical results are called within 30 minutes from time of results. The Laboratory serves a diverse population including neonate, infant, pediatric, adult, and geriatric inpatients and outpatients.

Available services include: Hematology, Coagulation, Virology (limited), Oncology, Mycology, Bacteriology (limited), Cyto-hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Urine Pregnancy, Toxicology, Immunology/Serology, Immunohematology, Endocrinology, Cytopathology, Histopathology, Blood pH and Gases, Point of Care Testing (Glucose Monitoring) and Blood Bank Transfusion Services.

Relationships with outside reference laboratories allow for completion of any laboratory send out tests in a timely manner via computerized interface.

The Laboratory personnel include: Pathology Chairperson/Laboratory Medical Director, Clinical Administrative Laboratory Director, Clinical Laboratory Pathologists, Clinical Laboratory Managers, Supervisors, Lead Medical Technologists, Medical Technologists, a Histo-technician, Pathology Assistant, Laboratory Assistants, a Transcriptionist, and Administrative Assistants.

Core Laboratory

Laboratory Medical Director and Scientists are available to provide guidance on test strategies and the interpretation of results.
