Transfusion Medicine (Blood Bank)

The mission of the Transfusion Medicine Department is to safely provide blood and blood components to our patients. This is achieved by licensed Medical Laboratory Scientists performing extensive screening and pre-transfusion testing with strict adherence to NYSDOH regulations. We support our busy Emergency, Maternity, Hemodialysis and Surgery Departments with all of their transfusion requests. We provide specialized blood components to meet the needs of Rockaway’s diverse patient population, including Sickle Cell Anemia and cancer patients. Approximately 3000 units are transfused annually at SJEH and each transfusion is carefully evaluated.
