Program Details

Four Residents, Four Years

Our training program in psychiatry is a fully approved four-year categorical program with four residents per year:

  • The PGY-1 year includes eight months of Inpatient Psychiatry, three months on the general medical floors and one month medical Emergency Room.
  • The PGY-2 year consists of four months Inpatient Psychiatry, three months of Consultation/Liaison, three months Psychiatric Emergency Room services and two months of Neurology at SUNY Downstate.
  • Our PGY-3 year consists of 12 months Outpatient Psychiatry, 20% of which will be Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
  • Our fourth year provides two months within the Substance Abuse Unit at Mercy Medical Center and fascinating electives in Community Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Palliative Care, and Chief Residency.

Medical students from several universities complete their core rotation in Psychiatry at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. The residents will be expected to assume an active role in teaching. We also provide a very comprehensive didactic schedule and many teaching conferences.

As a supplement to our broad range of clinical experience, the Psychiatry Program offers an extensive conference schedule. Our bi-weekly medical Grand Rounds often feature eminent speakers from major medical centers. We also provide a monthly Basic Science Conference.

Residents at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital are actively participating in QI and Safety projects. Participation in research is strongly encouraged.

The ancillary services provided at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital are extensive and efficient. These include 24 hour per day phlebotomy, transporter services and EKG team.

St. John’s Episcopal Hospital is an equal opportunity employer. Please review this information carefully and submit your application and supporting documentation through the ERAS system.
