Program Highlights
- Hands-On Training: Fellows are trained in full body wound care and venous leg ulcers and they obtain hands-on training with podiatric, general and vascular surgeons. There are opportunities for clinical practice and patient interaction in diverse settings including outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and surgical settings. Fellows fill also take a 40-hour hyperbaric training introductory course, which gives the ability to supervise hyperbaric oxygen therapy within the scope of podiatry through on-site hyperbaric medicine practice.
- Research Opportunities: Engage in groundbreaking research projects with opportunities to publish in reputable Podiatric journals and present at local and national conferences.
- Work-Life Balance: Committees in place to promote resident wellness and support work-life balance throughout training, with support from faculty. No calls and no weekends.
Program Didactics
- Grand Rounds: Fellows attend and participate in weekly grand rounds that cover a range of topics. Fellows typically present challenging wound care cases that involve multiple factors affecting healing, such as diabetes, vascular disease, pressure ulcers, or infected wounds.
- Journal Club: Fellows present articles weekly from leading podiatric and medical journals, discussing methodologies, results and clinical implications. Designed to foster critical thinking, journal club serves as a bridge between academic research and clinical practice.
- Workshops and Skills Training: Podiatric Surgical and wound care skills, debridement, bone & tissue biopsies and wound vac.
Clinical Experience
The Fellowship program at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital prepares podiatric fellows for treatment of all types of wounds. It helps meet the ever growing need for treatment of chronic wounds. It trains fellows as an integral part of the wound care team. The program also provides hyperbaric oxygen therapy training so providers are comfortable prescribing and managing wound care patients that receive adjunct hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
