The full-service Department of Emergency Medicine at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital is equipped to treat all levels of emergencies and serves a critical need for residents of the Rockaway peninsula, Southern Queens County and Western Nassau County. Over 44,000 patients were treated in the Emergency Department in 2015, with 2016 volume even higher.
The highly trained Emergency Department staff is comprised of Board-Certified Emergency Medicine Physicians, Physician Assistants, Registered Nurses, Resident Physicians, and Patient Care Assistants, all with extensive training and experience in emergency medicine. The team provides comprehensive emergency care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including rapid evaluation and treatment for:
- Heart attack and other cardiovascular emergencies
- Sepsis
- Stroke
- Head injuries
- Obstetrics and gynecology emergencies
- Orthopedic injuries
- Behavioral health emergencies
- Headache
- Abdominal Pain
The Emergency Department also provides rapid evaluation and treatment of pediatric and geriatric emergencies.
Rapid Access Area
Rapid Access is a seven-bed rapid assessment and treatment unit within the Emergency Department dedicated to patients with non-critical conditions requiring emergent and urgent care. Physically separated from critically ill patients, Rapid Access patients are evaluated, treated and released as quickly as possible to allow these non-critical patients to minimize their time in the emergency department. Patients with more serious illnesses or injuries are triaged to the Main Emergency Department where additional diagnostic testing may be performed to provide the highest level of care possible.
Building for the Future
A major expansion and renovation of the Emergency Department is now underway, which will double the size of the existing Emergency Department and provide an enhanced patient experience and additional space for family support. When fully completed, the new Emergency Department will provide individual private examination rooms, a rapid evaluation unit, and a separate mental health unit. The new Emergency Department will also have its own dedicated radiology suite including a CT scanner to further expedite and improve patient care. In August 2018, Phase 1 of the 3-phase project was completed and the new Emergency Department space was opened for patients.
