Rheumatology

  • Division Chief: Daniel Cohen, MD
    718-869-7000

The Division of Rheumatology at Episcopal Health Services provides care for all adults with rheumatologic conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, lupus, vasculitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, bursitis, tendonitis, tennis elbow, sciatica, low back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome.

The Division uses a combination of clinical, immunological, medical and orthopedic approaches, with a cohesive understanding of the systemic nature of rheumatologic illnesses. Diagnostically, the Division’s physicians are students of how the body works, experienced in piecing together all the information into a recognizable pattern and coming up with a diagnosis and best strategies for addressing the condition and managing the treatment. Many patients’ immune systems are overactive, lacking in proper control mechanics. The Division seeks to down-regulate the immune system without impairing it.

Services of the Division offers include: injecting inflamed and damaged joints, medication management (anti-inflammatory, rheumatologic and immunomodulator medications); infusing patients with new biologic drugs for rheumatic disorders; performing bone density testing (the Division’s physicians were pioneers in the region, among the first to use this now-standard screening for osteoporosis); and analyzing immunological lab results. Ongoing care of patients with chronic, systemic, musculoskeletal and inflammatory conditions is essential and the Division provides referrals for physical and occupational therapy, and/or orthopedic surgery, when appropriate.

Evaluation and treatment are conducted on a regular basis in the Hospital’s Ambulatory Care Center. Appointments for the Arthritis Clinic are necessary and are by referral only from a primary care physician. Please call 718-869-7690 for more information on the Arthritis Clinic.
